Laser Eye Surgery Side Effects & Complications
It is a known fact that laser eye surgery has an approximate 90% success rate despite this fact patients need to be aware of possible laser eye surgery side effects. Major factors that need to be taken into consideration are the patient’s age and state of health.
Despite the high success rate of laser eye surgery there are potential side effects of which some are short term and some long term. However this is a relatively safe procedure used for correcting eye impairments and the beauty of laser eye surgery is that patients will no longer have to use glasses or contact lenses again.
After a surgical procedure of this nature one can expect:-
* slight vision impairment and discomfort and
* some patients also experience tearing and irritation and may develop reddish spots on the whites of the eye which are all perfectly normal and temporary and should subside within a few days. But should some of these symptoms continue you need to consult with your surgeon immediately.
Here are some of the most common side effects a patient might experience after having laser eye surgery although rare in the long term these side effects can be treated quickly and effectively. Side effects such as
* post operative eye infection could develop which will cause the healing process to take a lot longer but can be treated immediately.
* Halo Effect:- During the evening when the light is dim patients may experience a halo effect which will last for around two weeks which is caused from an untreated peripheral cornea.
Note:- If patient’s experience a halo then they should avoid driving and should they continue to see this halo after two weeks they need to contact their ophthalmologist immediately.
* Dry Eye:- Some patients may experience dry eye after laser eye surgery which means the eye is unable to produce tears. With dry eye one will experience a burning sensation as well as irregular blurring. This can be corrected effectively with eye drop therapy prescribed by your surgeon.
* Flap Loss:- During the surgical procedure a flap of tissue is created over the cornea which should remain in place for at least twenty four hours post operatively. However this flap could be accidentally removed due to a patient rubbing or touching the eye within the stipulated time period and this in known as flap loss. In the event of flap loss the patients needs to inform the surgeon right away.
A patient may still have to wear corrective lenses after having laser eye surgery which is termed as undercorrection or overcorrection as not all patients respond and when this occurs the ophthalmologist may suggest enhanced laser eye surgery which should ultimately improve the initial laser surgery.
However laser eye surgery side effects are rare in comparison and on the whole laser eye surgery is a huge asset to patients around the world that suffer from eye disabilities. For more information you can go online or you can discuss the possibility of side effects with your surgeon before you decide to go ahead and have laser eye surgery done. As long as you take proper care after laser eye surgery, you should be fine. Always consult your surgeon, if in any doubt.
