Otoscope is an effective piece of equipment in an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist’s armory and is used to check the ear. Otoscopes are primarily used to check any sort of abnormalities or infections in the ear by the specialist. It is an effective way as the way it has been designed the specialist can screen and look for each and every minute detail in the ear; no matter how complicated it is in its formation. The specialist or the doctor can easily investigate or check the outer as well as the middle part of the ear with the help of the otoscope. An otoscope is very easy to use and portable equipment which makes ear investigation a hassle free process.
The way it has been designed and manufactured, the otoscope consist of a light and a magnifying lens which helps in the investigation in the middle part of the ear relatively easy. The top front end of the otoscope which consists of a disposable attachment known as ear speculums is inserted inside the ear to check and investigate. The ear speculum in the otoscope is inserted in the outer cervix of the ear and with the help of the light and magnifying glass detailed investigation inside the middle or most visible part of the ear can be viewed by the doctor.
There are different kinds of otoscopes which are available in the market and can be used depending upon the kind of extensive requirement which one has. There are certain otoscopes used by doctors which have a small sliding slot near the rear window. This slot is primarily used by the doctors to insert various other external equipments inside the ear. These external equipments can be used for completing important and tedious tasks like removing earwax which gets accumulated in the middle part of the ear and is not very easy for the individual to clean or complete himself effectively. Alternatively, there are certain otoscopes which have an inbuilt point to insert a bulb. This bulb is used by the doctor to push air inside the ear through the ear speculum of the otoscope. Such otoscopes use advanced technology and are known as pneumatic otoscopes. The process of passing the air through the ear is used to check and test the fragile and delicate ear membranes.
Many doctors in the various medical institutes and hospital use otoscopes which are wall mounted, as shown in the picture above. These wall mounted otoscopes are held on to the wall with the help of a multi purpose power cord which hold the otoscope onto the wall as well as provide the electric power supply when it is used by the doctor during investigations. The portable otoscopes which are available in the market do not have provisioning for electric power supply; instead they use chargeable batteries which are used to supply power to the light feature in the otoscope.
Pulse oximeters, stethoscopes, ecg monitors, otoscopes, opthalmoscopes are commonly found in Doctor's bag.
Most of the specialists use these equipments during intricate and detailed investigations as such machines are helpful in the entire process and very easy to use.
